![]() I’ll admit the bands efforts since haven’t quite matched the standard of ’ Stay What You Are’ which is perhaps explains why it’s still fondly thought of. Whilst other tracks like ’ Nightingale’ and ‘Firefly’ border on pop-rock due to the bands accessible hooks. Songs like ‘Freakish’ and ‘At Your Funeral’ thrived on Chris Conley’s sensitive, emotive words. Whilst their second album, ‘Through Being Cool’ is often cited as being an influential pop punk record, 2001’s ‘Stay What You Are’ had a larger impact within the emo genre as its mix of melachonic lyrics, Weezer-like angst and warming melodies. The end result was a record that had tons of longevity and strengthened the bands influence within the punk community. Despite ‘Stupid Kid’ and ‘Private Eye’ receiving plenty of air play on music video channels, ‘From Here to Infirmary’ was more than just a “single-heavy” album, instead it was a consistent record that subtly kept to the bands dark punk rock origins, but at the same time had a more accessible approach. The third album from Chicago’s Alkaline Trio was their Vagrant début and introduced the band to a new audience. What are your favourite Vagrant Records releases? Let us know on our Facebook or Twitter. It’s influence and impact is still going strong today and bands from that period are still benefiting from now, as the success from their Vagrant releases opened them up to wider audiences, helped establish themselves and grow their fan base.įrom a music fan’s perspective, I (Sean) remember how much of an influence Vagrant’s ‘Another Year On The Streets’ compilations had on my music tastes and opened me up to many bands that I still listen to today.Īlthough this edition of “Fives” isn’t the best Vagrant Records albums, they our favourite and influential records from that period. In the early 2000’s, Vagrant Records thrived of the success on The Get Up Kids’ 1999 album ‘Something To Write Home About’ and in the following years it become home to some of the best punk and emo bands around, from Dashboard Confessional to Saves The Day to Rocket from the Crypt to Alkaline Trio and more. ![]() But above all else, Breckenridge is just hoping that everyone is the mood to rock out and have a good time, because he and his trusty trio of creative partners surely are.For this edition of “Fives” we once again get all nostalgic as Already Heard’s Sean Reid and Tom Knott reminisce on Vagrant Records and five releases from around the millennium. There’s plenty at play here as Thrice readies for their return to Worcester, in terms of what is getting them excited to get out on stage this weekend. “We just wanted to try something new, after having put in a 10-year stint with the label, and our history with them is longer than any other label we’ve been on.” Like anything else in business, you’re always looking for a fresh start here and there, and it wasn’t anything against Vagrant,” says Breckenridge. “We spent almost a decade on that label, and put out a bunch of music and had a really good relationship. They were family for the better part of a decade, and we’re still so thankful for everything we were able to do with them, and we’re thankful that they’ve asked to be a part of this celebration.”īut as the music industry, bands move on from labels, and some burn bridges, but in the case of Vagrant and Thrice, that couldn’t be farther from the truth - possibly as evident by the fact that they were invited to participate in this shindig - and Breckenridge couldn’t more thankful for the lasting relationship. We already had a relationship with Rich Egan, who used to run the label, and they were a local label, so if we ever needed to connect with them, it wasn’t a massive undertaking. They were one of the first labels that reached out to us after hearing that we were free agents, and that meant a lot to us. “ was eager to sign us, as we had just split with Island Records, and we needed a new home. ![]() While their stint with Vagrant lasted for the better part of a decade, and Thrice has gone on to achieve significant success with other labels over the course of their career, it was the Vagrant family that not only saw what the band was truly capable of, but according to Breckenridge, was also a nurturing force in allowing the band to explore what they had in mind creatively.
